OK I found RPM updates for PHP and MYSQL on redhat.com and I have downloaded them. Do I need to RPM-e the existing version? They don't seem to be as new as the ones on the offical sites for each product.
What you should do is get the newest versions of the RPM packages for Apache, PHP, and MySQL (including related packages like php-mysql). Once you have those all together in a directory, you can upgrade them one by one with the "rpm -Uvh php-4.3.x-x-x-x-x.rpm" command or you can use "rpm -Uvh *" to upgrade all packages in that directory.
"rpm -Uvh" will smoothly upgrade existing packages by handling config files gracefully, removing the previous package, and installing the new one. If you installed the new packages with "rpm -i" then you will have to manually remove the older versions.
PHP has always worked immediately for me on Red Hat Linux, with no configuration required.
