OK I found RPM updates for PHP and MYSQL on redhat.com and I have downloaded them. Do I need to RPM-e the existing version? They don't seem to be as new as the ones on the offical sites for each product.

I did install the existing versions of the RPMs that were on the server and restarted HTTPD but PHP still is not active. I see all kinds of directives in the httpd.conf re php if IFDEFINE etc which I assumes looks for the presence of the code and loads it or do I need to do something. Also dio I need to change the php.ini? Finally if this is the wrong place to ask such questions might you point me to the appropriate list-serve. I looked at php list-serves and there are a zillion !

TIA

I am trying to install PHP on my RH 7.0 box . I see a RPMS file that
looks like PHP but I am wondering if I should install a newer version
from www.php.net.
I have been reading the installation info on www.php.net but still don't
"get it"

yes. you should install the latest stable version as there may well be
security holes in older versions

Does this also install MySQL at the same time?

i think you'll find this only installs the php/Mysql component. you should
visit www.mysql.com to install that separately.

cheers
