okay, then your pop server in mozilla mail is localhost, and nothing else. As 
you can see from your telnet session, localhost responds to it fairly well...
you can even list your mail from the telnet session, to prove that the error 
is in the Mozilla/client settings:

telnet localhost 110
user ed
pass <password>
list
retr <number>

should show you mail on your server

e.g.
(edited a bit to be relevant)

stuart stuart :telnet <mailserver> 110
