Just downloaded and tried the latest kernel offered via up2date and it failed with a panic. The message before that was talking about using a "root=" something as a boot option. I rolled back to the previous version which booted fine. As my server is only a personal one I can wait before digging deeper. Especially I'm a desktop Linux type person. This is more of an alert in case any one else comes across the problem or wants to test on a lesser system before going overboard. If it helps anyone I can try again and get the exact info.
