Or, if running Grub, when you get the boot menu, press "e".  Choose the boot
option for linux and press "e" again.  Add the word "single" to the end of
that line and press enter.  Then press "b" to boot off the modified line.
That will boot you to a bash prompt where you can type "passwd" to change
root's password.
