Hi,
I'm not sure but can take a stab at it. 

The  /etc/passwd- seems to be a copy showing the last iteration of passwd. A 
diff on the two shows the last user I removed from the system.

 /etc/passwd.lock sounds like something that vipw or similar utility may set 
while editing the file. Is there someone else that may have it open or a 
session ended while vipwd was in use?

Maybe someone can confirm or deny this info :-)
