What about vmware?

If you could create a "virtual computer" for each of your developers, would
that work? Any vmware users out there have any comments?

VMware has the concept of a virtual computer that will not commit changes made to it, such that every time an instance of that virtual machine is started, it starts in exactly the same place and in the same conditions, not remembering anything that happened the previous time it was run. I do not recall the exact name of the feature, but it should be easy to find.

Also, take a look at VMware GSX server. A friend is running one of those to serve up several VM's at once over the network, and it sounds like the combination of GSX and the "forgetful computer" above might be just the ticket for you. The truly ruthless can then hack a virtual computer to their heart's content, but the moment the logout all changes are forgotten and blown away.
