Ensure that your window maker starts. Gdm should be working since you could log in. Does the same happen when you login as root or another user? Could be that the default.session
file is corrupt. Try to install the XFree86 packages again and delete the last sessions in your ~/.gnome/session (rh 7.2) or metacity or whatever window manager you use.
