How many mail message are in your queue?:
# mailq | head

One thing I do is decrease the retry timeout for all returned mail:
O Timeout.queuereturn=5d  ->  2d
#O Timeout.queuereturn.normal=5d   ->  2d
#O Timeout.queuereturn.urgent=2d   ->  1d
#O Timeout.queuereturn.non-urgent=7d   -> 2d

A lot of spam mail tries to bounce back and just gets denied - so why
keep it in the queue for 5 days? I think 2 is more reasonable nowadays
- maybe even less, 12h?

Anyway, my mailq has really decreased and sendmail isn't having to work
as hard.
