When I switched from using sendmail to postfix as my MTA, I did not have
any problems using the mail command. So I have no idea what might be
causing your problem.

FWIW: When I did make the switch to postfix, I had to run
'redhat-switch-mail' to update all the symbolic links in
/etc/alternatives
