Same issues here, even on a dual-xeon box with 1 gig of RAM...

I don't know about the rest of you, but that looks like package Xft will
*not* install on current RedHat 9 boxes running XFree 4.3.0.  Or am I
missing something?  How does the old Xft package address this issue?
