Previously:
I find the following in ~/.xsession-errors:

/usr/bin/startkde: line 1: sed: command not found
[snip]

There was indeed an error in my PATH entry in ~/.bash+profile.  I fixed
that and now KDE starts normally.  Sorry for the bother...
