Not sure what the deal is but as a data point my brother has a network
with about 50 XP pro users banging on a RH 8.0 box as the primary file
and data server for an accounting office.  We used winbind to
authenticate against the existing PDC and all is good. WAY faster than
the NT3.51 server it replaced on the same hardware.
