Well, as I found in the "cool light of the am" my Zaurus was in its cradle and when the system booted, it stole eth0. I unplugged it, and rebooted (well, I tried rmmod'ing stuff but was unable to bring up the network card any other way but the reboot). Now the system is working normally again. Many thanks for all the suggestions. Much as I hate to do it, digging through /var/log/messages was what solved the problem.
