Open the /etc/inittab file, look for this line:

id:#:initdefault:

(with # being 1, 2, 3, or 5)

If you read the comments in that file, you will see which runlevel you
need to be in (5) to get X to open on boot.  Change the # to 5 and you
should have it boot to X.
