Check your setting in iptables/chains. Check whether or not you can 
connect from the local host.

Check in /etc/xinetd.d/. You should have a file for pop3 and for pop3s. If 
not, you will need to create them. This determines which ports inetd will 
will listen on.

No, not unless you have a reason to change. You have all the software 
needed, you just need to get it working.:)
