Sorry but we live in the real world too. I get you want things fixed and
you want them to work, but we've been bitten too often by USB letting us
down at critical moments. What's the point of setting your array to
rebuild if it's unlikely to complete?
I don't know how long a streaming copy would take on one of your disks,
but the MTBF of USB is probably a similar order of magnitude. As I found
out personally with PATA, sharing a controller leads to PAIN PAIN PAIN.
As Roger says you probably have two - or three tops - USB ports, and you
probably don't have a clue what devices are on them. It only takes a
device you forgot (or didn't realise) was there to stall the
port/controller/hub, and your recovery will get trashed.
Will your computer(s) take an add-in PCIe board? At about £30 apiece
that's two extra (e)SATA ports. Then you're out another £30 for a eSATA
dock, and when your next disk croaks you have a RELIABLE way of
rebuilding it, not something that's going to crap out on you without
warning.
Cheers,
Wol
