Not sure if the Promise controller is as configurable as the mainboard 
itself, or maybe even configurable THRU mainboard BIOS - I have no 
experience with add-on IDE-type controllers. I normally work with SCSI 
myself. You may have to recover your data using an on-board (BIOS 
configurable!) IDE controller and re-partition when you put the disk(s) 
back on the Promise.

BTW this is hardly a RAID-kernel-specific matter. Perhaps a more 
IDE/hardware oriented list will provide you with more detailed answers 
to this matter.
