It's not the device itself, it's the device I have selected in my .asoundrc! Here is a snippet of my .asoundrc (my first email has a link to the full file) pcm.dmixed { type asym playback.pcm { type dmix slave { pcm { type hw card 3 My card 0 is the internal motherboard audio, and card 3 is my usual usb audio. If I have card set to 3, all other cards except card 3 work flawlessly with this game, and, if I set it to 0, only card 0 does the cracy sound (and card 0 si not an usb device). SDL is using alsa and not pulseaudio, and if I change it to use pulseaudio the sound goes terribly wrong again. I suppose that pulseaudio is doing something wrong with the device, probably due to a misconfiguration or something?
