Forgive me if I used the wrong terminology. Perhaps 'jitter' was not
the best word to describe what I experienced.

I found a solution, and post it here for reference. Hopefully it will
help someone else. It all turned out to be an incarnation of the power
save issues for the snd_hda_intel driver as described for Fedora 12
here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_F12_bugs#hda-clicks

I will report this to Debian shortly. The workaround as described for
Fedora fixes the issue in Dabian.
