Jitter when using compositing (a.k.a. screen effects) in KDE 4

I run pulseaudio with KDE and love it.

Now, mine is a quite old computer, and though it has a powerful
graphics card (ATI Radeon Mobility X1600), I experience jittering
while playing audion and using compositing (a.k.a. screen effects).

Is there a good way to reduce this? A buffer I can adjust, or something?

;)Frode

PS: I hope I used the correct terminology. The phenomenon I call
jitter is experienced such that the sound breaks into little
non-continous pieces of stuttering. Please correct me if I am wrong
here.
