I think this patch should be kept for the next release. The current RC state forbids to add new features. My current aim is to have RC4 correcting most of the bugs ending in a final 0.8.
PEAR::SOAP will most likely continue in PHP5. Shane Caraveo already started work on the next generation package a while ago. The C extension is very important but some people need the flexibility of php code.

Hey Arnaud,
There was a patch in WSDL.php posted to the mailing list a while back on
adding SimpleType support in PEAR SOAP. This would be a great feature
so we could use ENUMs :) Second feature on my wish list would be digest
authentication.
Do you think PEAR SOAP will continue on in PHP5? There seems to be some
current limitations in the C-extension, for example digest
authentication, changing transports, etc.

There isn't a formal team working on PEAR::SOAP. Shane Caraveo didn't
have a lot of time available to take care of the package so he
delegated the task to me. I must admit I haven't done a great job for
a while.
Are you referring to PHP4 or PHP5 version, or both?
My mistake for not mentionning.
I was refering to the PHP4 version, ZEND_ENGINE_1 branch in cvs.
