You can do it using email. Each carrier has an email account for text messenging.. for instance, with att, you would send the email to 5555555555@xxxxxxxxxxx for MMS you'd send it to 5555555555@xxxxxxxxxxx You would have to know the carrier that the phone belonged to and the format for the email address for it, but it works well.
