Answering my own question.......according to the SQL Glossary at

Non-standard special character. Usual name: "number sign". Also called:
octothorpe, hash sign. 


Maybe Sergio is trying to insert the string without enclosing it in quotes
first, therefore attempting to interpret the hash?

data ---   maybe     and wants to insert  'x'  in the  3rd position
to make the data as    maxybe

Don't know for sure without an example of how the insert is wanting
to work
