How could it be the case that we're experiencing open_basedir > restriction here? I ran into problems with openbase_dir when using symlinks... They only really reared their ugly head when I upgraded to 5.1.6 before that they were OK (tho' if memory serves I had to add both the symlink location and the directory it pointed to.
