building for FreeBSD

Hey guys,

I just built PHP 5.6.1 for FreeBSD and noticed that all the extensions 
where named with a .a instead of a .so, do I have to go do an 'ar -x 
extension.a' to get the .o out and rename it .so?

If so, why didn't the make process create .so instead of .a

FYI I configured it using --disable-static
