I worked on a Movie in Iceland, was there for 3 months. You don't NEEED a 4wd it depends on where you are going.  There are places that do need them but I drove around the entire country in a 1.0Liter VW Polo in 4 days including tstops. (It can be done in about 18 days on Highway 1 if you just drove and fueled.  It's like 1300km) Sometimes that means going slow.    I would show your itinerary to the rental agent and ask what car is appropriate for your plans.  Gas in Iceland is about $6.30 a gallon (1.65 per liter)   Remember the farther around the island you go the less stops there are, so you have to plan distances and gas if you are going very far around Extra fuel tank recommend for some places.  A HOT day, LIke we were sweating because normal day was 16C, is 22-25C.  Its Iceland, have emergency winter clothing if you are getting out away from anything. The one saving grace is that as long as the people you meet are educated AT ALL. They speak some English.  It's taught mandatory in school. They don't always practice so they can be unsure and nervous when you get away from Reykjavík tourist areas.   I was in a grocery story and the teenage check out girl spoke icelandic to me and I respond in french, That was mean, I winked and spoke in English and apologized. They tended to have good (is not insane) sense of humor. No one in Iceland will not be kind (im sure there are acceptions)

Unless you are landing at the same timeish, I would meet in Ingolfstorg square right in front of the Center Hotel. Since every single bus taxi bicycle drops people off there.   EVERYONE knows this place.
Even if you don't find a person before you get to Iceland, You might find people in Iceland.  I once traveled a whole day with a French couple who had basically the same day planned as I did.

Hi Peter,

Some years ago (maybe ten…?) I did Iceland trip the same dates.

1.       4WD is recommended.

2.       Eat – I brought a gas stove (bought a balloon in a gas station) and all the other ingredients from Supermarkets or bakeries.
I was cooking my meals outside in nature.
(I ate only once or twice in restaurants.)

3.       Sleeping – It is cold out there! Even in August.  Mountain huts can give you cheap solution but 4WD is needed.  Otherwise tourist information offices will make you reservations to private homes.

Roy – meeting point should be in Reykjavík Airport.

I could post this to my club website in Cary, NC but I'm sure the first question will be where are you going to start from or meet to begin journey?  There are a few younger members to the club but most are older folk. Also a list of the expenses to share might be helpful.

Hi!

I tried to write some time ago, but the server turned my msg down. Ok, once more.

I am planning a budget photographic trip to Iceland from Aug 24 till Sept 08.

Rental car (2WD - no F-roads), sleeping bag acommodation, meals partly on the road or in location.

I have published this here and there to find a travel mate or two, just to share the costs and expenses, but practically no replies. It may be because of my own cumbersome personality (??) or people go out mainly for comfortablilty (??).

I decided to try this forum as well, although I haven’t contributed lately. But I promise - ifever I return from Iceland, I will.

So this is the question: does anyone know of anyone who would be happy to participate in a round trip on Iceland in august/september this year? I’d like to be out early and late to catch extraordinary light, although middays won’t be excluded either.

Please respond either to this forum (bad idea, maybe) or privately (pv@xxxxxx; pvissak@xxxxxxxxxx - much better idea :) ).

Kindest regards to everybody!
