One day in 1980 I spent an afternoon in Avedon’s studio watching him shoot a portrait and I learned something by watching him work. What did I see? I saw him purposely mask what his shutter button hand was doing so the sitter would not see when the shutter button was being pressed. Sometimes he looked away from the sitter to distract her and let her relax. The camera was on a studio stand, the sitter lit by only one light and as I recall that was a very large umbrella called an Octo. Avedon was shooting with a Rollei but acted like he might be shooting sheet film. Needless to say, the next day I went whipping back to Fotocare to buy myself an Octo before returning to Copenhagen. But they had none and so I had to wait about 20 years before I actually got one. Into the breach stepped a Plume style softbox and it ended up lighting almost every portrait I ever shot including the Dalai Lama.
