Thanks for the comment Karl. FWIW it's a symbol carved into the wall of the Mary Rose museum at Portsmouth, a copy of one of the sailor's symbols found on the wreck. They apparently used them to identify their personal wooden property (mugs, plates etc) even though most probably couldn't write. Yes, right way up was better.
