Randy and all,

This information has been incredibly valuable to me. It's brought me out of what was the early stages of a tailspin of depression thinking I was going to have to buy a whole new computer.

Thank you to everyone who has responded. Today I'll be on the hunt for a new video card.

I'll keep you posted with how it goes!

You won't see a boot screen but if you use both cards you can must plug in if you need it for some reason NVIDIA gtx 485 will add a lot of life to that computer.  I actual have gtx760 but I have additional power supply.

Yes, original video card which I'm beginning to believe is the culprit. 

The new Dell is 23.8" and resolution is 1900 x 1080 or something like that...it's late, I'm tired and the box is in my office. 

I did have preferences set to show all resolutions and tried them all but they were each yuk.

There's a used Cinema Display on Craigslist. Maybe I'll just go get that and forget about a new monitor?

My system rocks and works like a charm but this monitor issue has been a time-consuming pain.  A girl gets used to a dual monitor setup and it's hard to go back to just one.

Would I have an easy time finding an upgrade for my video card? I'm in Kansas City where we have Apple Stores, MicroCenter and the Royals.

Yes VGA doesn't support the resolution you are trying to use.  I have use Dell Ultra sharps and HP Dream Colors exclusively for 6 years.  With the same computer you have (well i Have 3 computers hooked into a dual monitor setup.  DVI to hdmi should work but its really up to your video card.   Are you still running the acient AMD graphics card that came with it?   What size and resolution is the new Dell monitor?  Did reset your pram (command+option+p+r) before bong let bong 3 times then let go.   What does the control panel for monitors say?   are you showing only recommended display sizes or all sizes?

I'm using an early 2008 Mac Pro tower with Mavericks installed. Up until this morning I used two Apple Cinema displays. My secondary monitor, a 20 inch Apple Cinema, gave up the ship yesterday and wouldn't give a picture at all today.

I purchased a Dell ultra high resolution, not 4K, monitor, brought it home, hooked it up VGA to DMI and despite messing in my preferences I could never get the screen on the second monitor to look natural and not stretched.

At the recommendation of tech-support I went with a DMI to HDMI cable, skipping VGA completely, and couldn't get a picture on the second monitor at all.

Am I missing something?Surely there's a monitor out there of high resolution that will work on my older computer.

I'm open to suggestions, ideas, troubleshooting workarounds.
