I suspect this problem is a polarizing effect and that some digital cameras react badly to the polarized light that results from the internal refraction/reflection that causes the iridescent colors. Looking around the web, there are many examples taken with digital that show the effect so it can't be just digital imaging v film imaging. Just a thought.
