I'm sure calibration would help overall , however my immediate concern is that on the same computer, a laptop, different programs and posting to the forum, display differently, I've also noticed that two different programs print slightly differently. Bob.

It's always necessary to calibrate your monitor under, as much as possible, the equivalent of north facing daylight a couple times a month.  If your computer operating system has such a calibration routine, run it.  If you want to move to a more professional level with calibration, buy any one of the quality calibrating devices on the market.
