Re: Does anyone really enjoy digital photography?

I do enjoy digital photography - not least because I can now do enlargements - never having had the money and space to have proper darkroom facilities at home but as someone with an interest in music, married to a pianist and as a Cathedral Chorister I would suggest that there are some parallels between the current discussion and a consideration of the role, utility and sound of digital pianos and organs and their mechanical counterparts, and discussions about live versus recorded music. Digital pianos have their place in the home and in the school and there are features that cannot be matched by 'real' pianos not least in that they allow a pianist to practice silently - at least so far as those living in the same house or even in an adjoining property are concerned - and they require less routine maintenance and can be transported without the need for specialised transport and crew. Good digital pianos will sound better than ill maintained or cheaply built 'real' ones but I do not suppose that many people would prefer the digital piano when matched with a good 'real' piano based purely on an assessment of the sound quality. A 70 year old Steinway can be restored to as good as new condition a 7 year old electronic piano may well be obsolete due to lack of spares. There are some very good electronic organs often costing thousands of dollars yet 'real' organs are still being restored or replaced despite the cost being reckoned in millions. They each have their place and their role.

Being at a live performance - and hearing the same performance as a recording - not quite the same thing just like being there and seeing something is not quite the same as sitting at home and looking at a picture.

I know many photographers who were flagging, getting tired, giving up on
photography, whose interest was rekindled by digital. And at least one
who was coming close to giving up photography shortly after college, and
found the developing digital capabilities revitalized his interest, so
that (more than a decade later) he's a full-time photographer.

I kind of understand why film photographers feel a lack of confidence
about remaining with the tried and true technology, and why some of
those need to invent reasons for it beyond "I like it better"; but the
reasons they invent are either inherently laughable -- or so
embarrassing that they make things worse (which is how this article
reads to me).
