I have to chime in here.  "Most aspect ratios exist for a reason derived from some psychological study." ???  Certainly not true.  There may be a single one, namely the one having the so-called Golden Ratio but even then that's arguable.  The others all stem from a desire to standardize (that is, to be economically expedient).  I've heard many photographers who decry the tendency to achieve a standard aspect ratio.  (Full disclosure: I'm one of them.)

I've seen claims Henri Cartier-Bresson always framed in-camera and never cropped, but I admit I'm not that good.  If cropping is a sin, I'll just have to confess: I crop, I crop . . . .

I could also argue about the statement about broken rules but not now.

Cropping a poorly framed compositions doesnt make for a better composition.   If you find your self cropping that much you might choose to aquire the correct equipment to create your compositions.   Most apsect ratios exist for a reason derived from some pyscological study.  Arbitrarily changing them defeats the use of the human brains natural desire for certain things to be in certain ways.  rules are made to be broken only if you understand why the rule exist in the first place.   Loose framing wont help lens distortion.

A proper undistort tool that properly scales the image is the right tool.
