I have to chime in here. "Most aspect ratios exist for a reason derived from some psychological study." ??? Certainly not true. There may be a single one, namely the one having the so-called Golden Ratio but even then that's arguable. The others all stem from a desire to standardize (that is, to be economically expedient). I've heard many photographers who decry the tendency to achieve a standard aspect ratio. (Full disclosure: I'm one of them.) I've seen claims Henri Cartier-Bresson always framed in-camera and never cropped, but I admit I'm not that good. If cropping is a sin, I'll just have to confess: I crop, I crop . . . .
