The final image fits in 8 bits well enough. It's the *original* image
that needs more resolution.
It's like negatives -- they had a lot more range than prints, and which
parts you printed where got decided in the darkroom. Using an 8-bit
image from the camera or scan is like printing from slides, there's no
slack at all and in fact you don't have *quite* enough range.
