RE: marilyn's choices

I have an ipad and have been disappointed with the word processing capabilities.  It is about the only thing I have been disappointed with though.  Without a USB port, no easy way to print without an extra step (like something like drop box)

Honestly I think you would be better served with any form of netbook.  It is cheaper than an ipad, has a USB port to make moving things around easier, can handle most printers and is lighter than most laptops.  A netbook is probably a couple of hundred bucks.  What is a mac book going for these days???  12 to 13 hundred or so??  Big difference if all you need is word processing.

Any of the macs are good as certain of them can be small, light and powerful.

That said, you really should at least look at an ipad. The on-screen keyboard may not be your cup of tea and if it's not you can add an external keyboard for large writing jobs. My world changed with my ipad...it's easy to tote around, it's easy to read in all sorts of places because you don't have to make room for the 90 degree angle of a laptop since it's just a flat screen, it doesn't get hot, and it does all sorts of things besides being a portable book. That said, if you use an external keyboard with it you really are kind of stuck to using it at a table while typing due to the fact that they ipad and keyboard are two separate items and won't necessarily stay attached to each other properly if one goes akimbo as can happen in a bed or recliner. Again, there's the on-screen keyboard that may suffice for you.

Not sure how you feel about such things but you might look for a used one on Craigslist. Mine is the original ipad and it's still running fast and smooth as silk; I saw no reason to upgrade but I know many do so perhaps there are some good ones out there at cheaper prices.

I'm not familiar with the Kindles or Nooks as writing tablets but you might consider them as well. I do know they are cheaper by scads than the ipad.

If you go the tablet route be sure to consider how you will get your writing from it to print form...could be as easy as an attachment but might be trickier depending on the software you use.

Happy shopping.
