RE: Everybody Is A Photographer

Tools are the fashion accessory of the garage, the original man cave.  They are there to show the other guys in the neighborhood.  Knowing how to use them to actually fix something is optional.  Tools are the guy equivlent of a woman and shoes.  A guy will pick up a table saw, where as a woman is going to get that new pair of Christian Loubitan's with heels that make her legs look great.  Least that is what she thinks and for some women its true.  Others wonder why the heels keep breaking on such an expensive shoe.  Hmmmm  Then the ever possible, "Do these shoes make my butt look big?"  It's not a good idea to ask "Am I under oath?"

Still there is a valid point to be made here.  Knowledge and skill can go long way in overcoming limitations.  Even now send and experienced and knowledgable photographer out with a 10D, and you still would get something good back.  Even with its limitations it would be valuable.  Send a guy out with no knowledge at all but where to press the shutter button, you know the fashion accessory guy, and with the best gear out there and you MIGHT still get something.  Automation in cameras these days is so good that in some situations no knowledge is little problem, but more often than not you get no good photos.  Luck counts, but its very unpredictable.

The pro KNOWS what he or she is going to get and can reproduce it on demand.  Luck has little to do with it.  You might get lucky from time to time with a natural light source, but it takes the skill to recognize it and put it to use.  Send a talented top pro with the best of equipment and the results are often timeless art.

Sure, you know how to use the 10D.  When I worked in a camera shop years ago I sometimes wondered if it was a camera shop or a jewelry store.   It was obvious that the Customer was buying the Leica so other people could see it around his or her neck.  But, the Customer was almost always right so we sold it to him or her.

Cameras, like saws, hammers, wrenches, etc are usually just tools.  Except as noted above.  But then I guess they're tools of a sort too.

Hi Gang..............

Now here is something I don't understand.................

Why is it when people talk about the "cons" of digital
they always mention that you have to up grade every
two years?

I used a Canon 10d for long time and since I was getting
great results with it I never saw the need to up grade.

At one point I got a large payment on a job and since I saw
the need for a second  body I bought a 30d, this was when the
50d was in production.  I didn't see the need to spend a fortune
on the newest technology when I didn't need it.

After my camera equipment was recently stolen,
I bought a Nikon D90 .............not the most recent technology!

If I am getting great results with the equipment I currently have.....

Isn't buying new stuff every year or so more like

"Keeping up with the Jones'"

Than actually needing or requiring to have a new camera?
