Re: Drive experiences

Whenever I have a drive act wonky I take it and it's cable (firewire 400 being my preference) to a new computer to see if it will mount and allow me access.

If it does I retry it on my original computer in a new port.

Most frequently I find my cables go batty, not the ports or the drives.

I have been having an inordinate number of what I interpreted as external hard drive failures lately.  After a lot of thought and some experimentation I discovered that the large majority of those were not the drives but the interfaces.  USB and Firewire portals seem to go buggy much more often than the drives themselves do.  Have others on this list experienced similar situations? Is there a good troubleshooting method to immediately identify the source of the problem?
