The most significant comment on this seems to be the keeping of backups "off-site" - there is no point in having extensive backups if all the drives are in the same house. And of course it depends on the quantity of data to be held. There are high capacity tape drives which might be a solution for huge amounts of data. For myself I have a backup computer - a second computer a duplicate of my main system - and clone the whole system to it on a regular basis. So if the main system were for any reason to be lost, I can bring out the backup from its off-site home, and I'm back to where I was with everything as it was when the most recent clone was made. Yes - this involves some loss if ever needed to be used - the loss of the most recent data created after the last clone - but in my case that would rarely be a significant quantity.
