There are situations where I'll spend a lot of time and effort trying to get it right, and others when I say to hell with it. The main thing is to just keep shooting.

The narrow depth of field has been one of the aspects of these images that makes them feel somewhat incomplete to me. This image was taken outdoors and was hand-held with the camera in my right (finger on the focus ring) and the flower in my left. This summer, I invested in a set of lights and a light box to continue these macro foliage studies. My lens goes down to f32 and I've been impressed with the DoF at that opening...and if I need to hand-hold something, it will be less of an issue as I'm firing at 1/1000th with one strobe at full power (need to experiment with different power/shutter/f-stop combinations to see if I can't emphasize shadows a little more). I'll have a cacti image from the first round of shots I took on Thursday up in next week's gallery.

Trevor Cunningham -seed bloom   In thumbnail it looks like fireworks, but enlarged the narrow depth of field and random focus doesn't work too well.  Seems that the center should be as sharp as the filaments surrounding it.
