Otis College of Art and Design
Date Posted: Feb. 24, 2010
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
Position Start Date: Available immediately
DESCRIPTION: Otis College of Art and Design invites applications for a full-time faculty appointment
in Photography. The successful candidate will also serve as Program Director for the Photography
area in Fine Arts. This position reports to the Chair of the undergraduate Fine Arts Department.
Otis College of Art and Design does not grant faculty tenure; hence, this is an annual full-time
faculty appointment, subject to renewal based on an annual performance review.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Otis College seeks a full-time faculty member, with both demonstrated teaching
effectiveness in the field of fine arts photography and professional standing as an artist in the
contemporary art community. A familiarity with editorial photography, in particular, fashion
editorial and photojournalism, is also beneficial. Candidates must demonstrate an interest and
ability to work creatively and effectively with a very diverse student body, as part of a team of
professional artist/educators.
This position requires full-time teaching responsibilities and the undertaking each semester of
technical duties, including, but not limited, to monitoring the use of sophisticated photography
equipment and, when necessary, the ordering of supplies. Ideally, the candidate would be someone who
understands both the medium's relationship to Fine Art and the relevant Design fields, such as
Fashion and Graphic Design.
The Photography Program is a vital part of the Fine Arts Department and the candidate would work
closely with the Program Directors in Painting and Sculpture/New Genre and, ultimately, report
directly to the Chair of Fine Arts.
The position also includes administrative duties pertaining to the successful running of a program.
These include, but are not limited, to: working with the department chair and fellow program
directors to help define the vision of the Fine Arts curriculum; the recruitment and evaluation of
faculty teaching within the Photography Program; the effective supervision of any teaching
assistants or other staff working for the Program; regular monitoring of the approved area budget;
active participation in the governance of the Fine Arts Department and of the College, as a whole.
QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will have a relevant MFA degree and a minimum of 3 years of
experience in full-time college-level teaching. Candidates must also demonstrate their interest in
and ability to provide successful administrative leadership and management of an academic program.
DEPARTMENT: The Fine Arts Department teaches the technical, theoretical, professional, critical and
personal skills necessary to sustain oneself as an artist.
