Re: Running Lightroom on own drive

A huge body of work that I've created is an on-going photo project of my niece Rachel.

I began by not keywording at all. BIG MISTAKE.

Then when I did start I was being far too specific...things like Rachel, blankie, thumb, foot, shoe, porch, kitchen, swing, park...so I essentially became overrun with keywords and finding the specific image was dependent on my knowing what else (besides Rachel) might be in the image or where it was taken.

Now what I do is keyword by name (Rachel) and location (park, Seattle, Kansas City, etc).

As I go through my images after import I flag and star them. The best ones get flagged, the best of the best get 5 stars. I don't use any other stars (though you can use 1-5).

To find images I go to Keyword>Rachel then I turn on my 'picks' which are my flagged images. From there I turn on my five stars and the image I'm looking for is pretty much bound to be there.

Because I intend to do a very large print project of these images I have also created a collection specific to her images which are the best of the best of the best. You add to a collection by clicking and dragging images to it. Very simple.

LR2.6 (and ealier ones, too, I believe) recognize multiple hard drives so you can bring images in from any number of sources and have them show up in LR. I have something like 12 hard drives feeding into LR. I'm pretty organized, though, so I know what things are where.

Keywording just makes them show up faster when I'm hunting around.
