You know I am probably missing something here but this question about digital camera lenses seems to be easily resolved empirically.   You all have seen thousands of digital images, many taken with a Coolpix, so you have all the evidence right in front of you.  Have any of you seen an image that manifests the effect that is being discussed or shows in the example?  Of course not.  David's comment about the lens in the article being telecentric front and back is very valid.  Camera lenses just aren't designed that way.

lens - the distant part of the object appears larger than the close part !
    

Okay, that picture is really scary!  I hadn't realized you could vary the
rendering THAT much in lens design!

Is that a result of being "double telecentric", though?  What's beneficial
to digital sensors is only on the sensor side, not on both sides.
