The only money "lost" is that the artist did not pay for rights to use the image. The artist profited handsomely as he got an art show and now his work is in
high demand where before he was only known in artistic circles. There is also
the punitive damages if the copyright was already filed with the Library of
Congress ( which I doubt it was because of the limited time). The AP also has to
look at future thefts and let people know if you cross AP they are going to come
after you.
