Karl and Herschel - thanks for the suggestions you made here about 1. using the LCD display as a lighting source when it needs to provide polarized light and 2. salvaging the polarizing filters out of presumably discarded LCD screens. I incorporated both your comments in that bit of a "tutorial" mentioned earlier. I could not suggest that anyone cut into an LCD as this may expose them to unexpected risk and as far as using the screens as "luminaries" (?) they'd probably only work with small subjects.
