We, my husband and I,  have a new V750 Epson Perfection Pro Scanner and want to scan 35mm and 4 X 5 black and white negatives. It came with Silverfast Ai. I have heard that VueScan is easier? better?. I also think digital ice does not really work well on b&w negatives.

As others have told you Digital Ice doesn't work on B&W or most Kodachrome.  As far as the software goes, I've used them all.  The full Silverfast program is by far the most flexible and gives you the most information to work with.  If Silverfast is the Mercedes  (expensive and full of features), then Vuescan is the Volkswagen (cheaper and basic), and the Nikon or whatever manufacturer's native software is the Chevrolet (it will work but you really need something better)

I only want to scan everything once so I want to get everything possible out of the negative or slide and, for me, the software to do that is Silverfast - HDR.
