Lea, I have been engaged in scanning slides shot over the last 50 years,
right now my days in Japan in the Navy, so I have some feelings about
this. I have a Coolscan IV and, while it gives very good scans, the
Nikon software seems to be the problem. Nikon Scan 4, at least, is very
slow. I tried copying on a light box and with a bellows and slide
duplication attachment and found both methods to be slow and inferior in
quality. I solved my problem by trying Silverfast and Vuescan and
purchasing Vuescan. It is considerably faster, does excellent quality
and seems to be able to utilize the dust and scratch removal just as
well. I can imagine that you may not want to invest in software for a
borrowed scanner but Vuescan can also be used with flatbeds. I got
Vuescan Pro, not all that expensive, and I am delighted with it.

It seems to be doing a lovely job but is quite slow. I'm doing 35mm negs.
Do I recall correctly that some on this lis have used a lightbox and
macro lens to 'scan' negs?
If so, would those who have done it share tips and tricks for getting
the best images?
I'd like to do several hundred negatives over the course of a year or
so. Most if not all will be in black and white.
Thank you.
