You simply can not see that much suffering without it effecting how you see the world.  Its fair and a natural by product.  His emotion shows through in his photos.  Great artwork no doubt about it.  Yet high emotion almost always leads to bad policies.  Separating emotion from policy decisions can be very tough to do.
