And  ... I forgot to mention.. LR show you ALL the images you had 
imported to it
even if the hard drive is not connected.
In this case ,of course, the former mentioned icon ( file is missing ) 
will show.
If you want to "Develop" the missing image you have to connect the 
external hard drive and this icon will disappear.
