Other than the full-frame sensor, just about everything is better on the 40D The 5D is however bigger, uglier and thus far more professional looking so it makes for a good-looking pendant and proves that you're serious about your work. As for image quality. I'd guess that because of the new chip and processor on the 40D, you'd get a slightly better image out of it. But probably, shooting the same image with the same lens on a 10x12 inch print you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the 10D, 40D and 5D. Consumerism leads us to believe that the newer item is automatically better and that things "Go out of date" like old fruit and vegetables. In reality the old canon F1 with a roll of decent film will make pictures every bit as good as the 1Ds Mk III.
